futility

Mom just told me about a possible customer for my computer tech support services. apparently, they had problems with their computer and needed help.

I called their phone number, but I must have typed it in wrong: I got ICA, the supermarket, instead. the worker who answered the phone seemed pretty receptive to the idea of me coming in to fix their computer, but he eventually asked me if I had called the right number. I hadn't.
I called again, and this time the number was right. a boy answered the phone.
b: hello, Gilbert residence.
M: hi! this is Jason, calling about your computer. I was wondering when I could come by to work on it.
b: hold on a minute, i'll have my mom talk to you.
m: ok.
c: hi Jason! how are you?
m: I'm fine. and you?
c: ok. (speaking away from the phone) Megan, have you had problems with the computer? anybody? Bob? (speaking to phone) I'll have my husband talk to you, ok?
m: ok. thanks.
d: hi Jason! how are you?
m: I'm fine. and you?
d: fine, thanks. When I talked to your mom, I thought that we had some problems with our computer. actually, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong anymore. that Norton Antivirus thing cleaned up a lot of stuff... so we don't need your help right now. if this thing doesn't work, then we might need you, but not now.

people believe in God because they think it gives them purpose.
but futility can be something to live for, too. can't it?
